Mental Health Disorders in LTC
This session will provide participants with helpful information about mental health disorders, psychosocial adjustment difficulties, history of trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Even though providers have been caring for residents with mental health disorders for a very long time, the caregivers have not received much training in this area.
Objectives:

  1. Describe the regulatory guidance related to mental health disorders
  2. Identify ways to properly identify and assess residents to ensure proper interventions are care planned
  3. Learn education strategies to train staff members on mental health disorders

May 2, 2019 | 2:00 - 3:00 PM
Chemical Dependency Issues in LTC
This session will provide the participants with knowledge and guidance for long term care staff members who care for residents with a history of or current substance abuse. As an industry we know that substance use and abuse is an issue but we rarely discuss it or assess it in post-acute care. In the future we anticipate even more chemical dependency issues in long term care residents so it is important we identify them and put interventions in place to help the affected residents.
Objectives:

  1. Recognize signs of progressive addiction and drug misuse in older adults
  2. Identify helpful management tools to manage compliance with residents who may use drugs or alcohol while a resident
  3. Learn how to identify chemical use in older adults and how to assist the resident with special services or treatment options

May 16, 2019 | 2:00 - 3:00 PM
Dealing with Difficult Behaviors
This session will provide the participants with guidance on practical ways to de-escalate behaviors in the long-term care setting.  Learning to identify the unmet needs of our residents can be very helpful in reducing or avoiding difficult situations we face with our residents who struggle with behaviors.
Objectives:

  1. Understand why residents have the behaviors they do
  2. Identify ways staff members can change their own behaviors to help residents more effectively
  3. Learn approaches that will help keep staff members and residents safe
  4. Describe three ways we can help staff deal with stress
