Recent reviews of Immediate Jeopardy citations reveal increases in resident-on-resident aggression, some of which is sexual in nature. On the other hand, we know that residents can experience failure to thrive if they are restricted from the comfort of warm and intimate relationships. Most of our feelings about sexuality, especially for older adults, stem from socialized beliefs that it is no longer appropriate for people once they become old. These enculturated assumptions can manifest in discomfort when a situation arises. In this webinar we will discuss normalizing older adult sexuality and some of the reasons for abnormal behaviors. Of critical concern is what to do about intimate relationships when one or both residents involved have dementia.

Objectives: 

• Define the many aspects of sexuality for older adults and how they may differ or be the same from younger populations
• Understand the positive aspects of intimacy and sexuality for residents
• Apply techniques and attitudes for positive outcomes from sexuality related incidents in nursing homes
• Understand the nuances of dementia and consent within the contexts of a nursing home
