session will provide the participants with knowledge and guidance for long
term care staff members who care for residents with a history of or curren
t substance abuse. As an industry we know that substance use and abuse is a
n issue but we rarely discuss it or assess it in post-acute care. In the fu
ture we anticipate even more chemical dependency issues in long term care r
esidents so it is important we identify them and put interventions in place
to help the affected residents.

This session will provide the particip
ants with guidance on practical ways to de-escalate behaviors in the long-t
erm care setting. Learning to identify the unmet needs of our residents ca
n be very helpful in reducing or avoiding difficult situations we face with
our residents who struggle with behaviors.
